Please Support S. 426

Dear (Legislator Title and Name)

As a constituent and a PA (physician assistant), I am writing to urge you to cosponsor S. 426, the “Grow Our Own Directive: Physician Assistant Employment and Education Act of 2017”.

S. 426 honors the military origins of the PA profession by improving access to ready care for our nation’s veterans, as well as by providing critical education and training support and mentorship to service members who wish to become PAs. I strongly urge you to cosponsor and support enactment of S. 426, the “Grow Our Own Directive: Physician Assistant Employment and Education Act of 2017”.

The GOOD Pilot Program supports veterans in becoming part of a well-respected healthcare profession with a longstanding commitment to veterans and veterans’ health; additionally, the program will add to the supply of PAs in VA medical facilities. Timely access to quality patient care is among the most critical issues facing our nation’s veterans. S. 426 aims to decrease wait times for health care by increasing the supply of PAs – one of the most in-demand positions at the VA. A review of VA provider staffing done in late 2016 by the Office of Inspector General reported that PAs ranked third among health professions experiencing significant provider shortages. By supporting former service members in launching careers as PAs within the VA, S. 426 will greatly improve the access to and quality of health care for our nation’s Veteran population, especially in rural communities, as well as encourage the utilization and growth of the PA profession with the VA.

 Thank you!
